We thru-hiked the Arizona Trail from Mexico to Utah. We
spent the night at the Mexican border and began our hike on Cinco De Mayo.
We chose this start date because of other personal commitments. Starting
the Arizona Trail in May is not recommended.
We found the Arizona Trail to be interesting and scenic. The trail climbs into many mountain ranges and the elevation gain/loss is quite significant to hikers. Combined with the rocky trails and heat the trail becomes quite difficult. The "high point" of our hike was the single day crossing of the Grand Canyon. The many warnings of the National Park Service about the high heat in the canyon concerned us. We started before dawn, took a short break at Phantom Ranch at 8 am, a longer break at noon at Cottonwood Camp, and finished our climb to North Rim early in the evening. The scenery on this one day makes the entire trip memorable. Our finish at the Utah border was on June 18 in blistering heat. We arrived at the deserted border campground in the blistering heat. |
